Christmas in the alps

Christmas is getting to be a bit like Marmite, some love it some hate it. It doesn’t help that you start to hear Christmas carols in the supermarkets in late October, by early to mid November most of them have the decorations up and the xmas stock piled high. You can’t move for mince pies, not a bad thing, lovely with a cup of tea, all year round.

It certainly seems to come around quickly. Perhaps because it’s not really a full twelve months from last years overindulgence before the spectre of this years affair hoves into view. God rest my liver! I’ve only just picked the last of the pine needles from the hearth rug when I trip over tins of Quality Street piled high in my local shopping centre.

Ok, bah humbug rant over, there are two groups that positively jump for joy at the prospect of christmas, kids and skiiers. Those who are organised booked the christmas weeks months ago, leaving a mad scramble for the last minute dotcom brigade to search for christmas accomodation.

It’s sometimes a leap of faith to book months in advance. Will there be snow? Well in certain resorts you can take it for granted, Zermatt for instance provides skiing all year round on the glacier high above the village. Only the resorts at the lowest altitudes may possibly be bereft of a decent piste.

By late November, early December the resorts at the highest altitude are open for business and quite a few of the lower resorts are in play too.

Signs are looking really good this year with plenty of snow already across the Alps and more due this week we are quietly confident here at SkiBoutique HQ that all our featured resorts are set for a white Christmas.

Here are a selection of opening times. Please note, certain areas of all these resorts are already open. See the official opening dates.
