Chalet Orso, and its sister Chalet Orca can be combined for larger groups to provide a beautiful chalet with incredible facilities. The chalets are run by Mouton Bascule, who specialise in renovations that pay respect to the environment and to the heritage of their surroundings. They also achieve beauty and luxury. It is fitting that these very special chalets are in Le Fornet. A little up the valley from its more brash neighbour, Val d’Isère, in Le Fornet the quaintness of an old French alpine village is embellished by access to world-class skiing. That it is also home to a two-star Michelin restaurant is an indication of its clientele. Discerning, we would say.
The chalets blend into the landscape, rough-hewn old stone belying the sophistication of their interiors. They are entirely separate, each with full chalet facilities including spas with pools and magnificent living spaces bathed in sunlight from enormous sheets of glass. Like cousins, there are family resemblances but each has their own stylish twist. For a large party or event, they can be rented together and can comfortable sleep up to 22 adults and 5 children.
The dimensions of the living space of the combined chalets stun and enthral. The massive windows echo the shape of the room, soaring upwards to the raftered ceiling above. On display is the magnificent panorama of the forest and mountainside. The impact is like a cathedral but this rapturous space shelters a haven with glamour and luxury. Sofas are indulgently soft, the light-coloured timber is elegant, the fireplace a masterpiece in stone and copper with flames dancing behind glass. The kitchen can be open or closed and its state-of-the-art equipment enables your accomplished chef to work miracles and travel the world’s cuisine according to the wishes of the guests.
The range of playthings for children (of all ages !) include table football, pinball, an authentic jukebox with vinyl records to spin, a TV and a bar. Or retreat to the dreamy cavern of the spa, where you’ll be able to luxuriate in two swimming pools, indoor jacuzzi both heated to different levels for a thoroughly indulgent water therapy experience. Then, there is sauna for dry heat, Hammam for steamy heat and, should you so wish, top range fitness equipment for working up a different sort of sweat. Or venture outside to the tingly air, the scent of the pine trees and the hot water of the Nordic bath on the terrace. Or head for the outdoor hot tub or the barrel sauna. So much to enjoy – you’ll need to plan your time to make the most of it all.
Bedrooms are serene with dark wood and gentle neutral colours. The master bedroom plays its role properly, with its super king size bed, dressing room, freestanding bathtub and separate shower. The seductive glow of flickering flames is a clean and effortless bonus - the fireplace uses ethanol. Another treat awaits: from its private terrace, nestled in the trees, you come upon a sauna cabin in the wilds. Albeit relatively tamed wilds as the bedroom door is a scamper away.
All the double bedrooms have king size beds and pretty views to the village or forest. And there are en-suite family rooms that make this the perfect chalet for everyone.
As one would expect in a chalet so exceptional, you will be well cared for. A chef, a butler and a valet. Or in French - chef, marjordome et voiturier. Just the use of those words conjures up the sense of service that is classically considerate, that subtle blend that is both friendly and professional. Leaving you to soak up the magic of a stunning chalet on the edge of an ancient alpine village that accesses a skiers’ paradise.
