Chalet Sandjeman is a pretty chalet on the edge of Morzine. It does self-catering in style. Rustic in appearance (except for the bright new timber) although modern, it nestles into a hillside close to the forest. Its position among alpine meadows is peaceful and yet only eight minutes’ walk to the lively bars and restaurants that cluster around Morzine’s town hall.

And if the walk to the lifts sounds a little too strenuous (or you think that you might appreciate collection from the abundance of bars and restaurants scattered around the resort) you can add a driver service onto your booking (at extra cost) and relax in the privilege of getting anywhere around Morzine and Les Gets, night or day.

Chalet Sandjeman is remarkably sophisticated for a self-catering chalet, but with a relaxed approach. It does not compromise on comfort and there is a lot of space even when full with twelve guests. Bed linen and towels, toiletries and bathrobes, are indulgently high quality. The kitchen is smart and well-equipped. The substantial dining table seats twelve. There is ample parking (two cars garaged, three outside). It goes that extra step further with a delicious outdoor hot tub and a barrel sauna on wooden decking overlooking the meadow with views to the mountains across the valley. There is champagne in the welcome pack.

Architecturally, Chalet Sandjeman is clever. Half levels built into the side of the hill and connected by a glass, metal and stone staircase, create interesting shaped rooms and let in lots of light. The design is bright and contemporary, mellowed by larch-wood cladding. The heart of the chalet is on the second floor where the open plan kitchen and dining area lead through to the large sitting room with its log fire. Another sitting room is half a level up, complete with lots of games to keep you occupied after skiing. Up a little more to the three generous double bedrooms all with ensuite shower rooms and large windows onto balconies. At the top, the master bedroom has a bathroom and spectacular views.

The entrance level of the chalet, where the ski and boot room (heated boot warmers of course) and the fully equipped laundry are to be found, also has the fifth bedroom. This is a true den. With its four single bunkbeds at one end and space for its own TV area at the other, any little gang of children can escape into their own world.

Extra luxuries can be added as well as the driver service. There could be a night, or several, when the services of a private chef would suit the rhythm of your week. Well-used muscles might appreciate the attention of a massage therapist – there is a treatment room in the spa area that leads outside to the sauna and hot tub. In many ways, this is chalet holiday à la carte. The privileges of the luxury chalet holiday are available but you have the privacy and independence of self-catering. The busy resort and efficient lift system are easily accessible, but you can retreat to tranquillity. You can have it all ways.
